The Truth About Jealousy

The Truth About Jealousy

Jealousy is an interesting thing. I heard someone saying recently that they were frustrated with their progress and that they thought they should be further ahead given their age. They compared themselves to some other people who had “made it” and the feeling of jealousy was taking over the perspective of their own life. They weren’t acknowledging how far they had already come in the path to their own dreams.

It’s natural to look at what others are doing and to sometimes wish you were in a different place in your life. The challenge is when you are constantly comparing yourself to other people and getting down on yourself for not being where they are or where you think you should be.

Even if you don’t think you’re the jealous type, there’s a good chance you’ve compared yourself to someone else at one point in your life. Even if you weren’t particularly jealous, that comparison happened.

The danger of going into what I call “Compare-itis” is that you’re not honouring your own path in life and often the comparison slows you down. It’s easy to get stuck in a cycle of comparison rather than action.

If you’re jealous, I encourage you to use that feeling to motivate you. You can choose some role models and study what they’ve done to create the success you desire in your life. Just be careful that you’re being inspired rather than going into comparison.

The best person to compare yourself to is yourself! Checking in on your own progress is much more powerful than any other comparison. It’s also the best measurement of your progress.

Here’s 3 questions you can ask yourself daily to help you stay on track to your dreams:

  1. How can I improve one aspect of my life or who I am today?
  2. How will I show up and represent myself in the world today?
  3. How can I become an even better person today?

Now, I’d love to hear from you. Which one of those questions resonated most with you that you will ask yourself every day? Please leave a comment below.

Remember this is YOUR own path. No one else’s. You are exactly where you need to be in your life.

Until next time, keep taking one step at a time. You’re on your way!

PS. If you know someone who you’d like to have as a role model, reach out and ask them what they’ve done to create their dreams.

PPS. When you manage your psychology about this and switch to being inspired rather than jealous – you’ll be soaring in no time!
