I was recently talking to a client and she asked, “How do I take an idea and turn it into a business?”. This is a huge topic! There are many components to starting a business, and it always starts with the seed of an idea.
Sometimes, the challenge is that you have so many ideas it’s hard to know which one to start with! Or you have an idea but don’t know if it could be a profitable business.
I’ve certainly been in the position of having many ideas and trying to decide which one to pursue. My ideas have been prolific, to say the least. The first thing to do is take a good hard look at whether you want to put your heart and soul into the idea for at least 5-10 years. Especially if you’re starting from scratch and not acquiring an existing business.
Sometimes you will need to engage a little in the industry you’re thinking about to fully get the answer to how committed you want be to an idea. Then, once you’ve decided, you need to go for it and have the attitude that you can’t fail. You can only learn.
Over the past 20 years of owning businesses, I’ve learned a few more things about taking a business idea to a reality.
