Sometimes it’s hard to let someone go. Whether it’s in business or in your personal life, occasionally it’s necessary in order to move forward. This can be more challenging when you’ve put a lot of time, effort, money and heart into a situation or person.
I recently had to fire someone and while it’s not my favourite thing to do, it was necessary. Ending someone’s employment with your company, especially if they’re affecting the overall team and culture is important to help your company thrive.
Since I’ve owned businesses for several years, there have been some occasions where I’ve had to take this final step to release someone on to the next step in their journey. I’m not one to relish in making this type of decision. I like to give people ample opportunity to turn things around and to evaluate whether they’re in the right job in the first place.
In this video, I share the steps I take to get to this final decision. Keep in mind that these steps can apply to your personal life and personal relationships too.
If you’ve done your part in providing support and training along the way and given them ample warning that there could be an end to their employment, they’re just not meant to be in that position. Once you come to your final decision and you’re ready to let someone go, remember to be as kind as possible while sticking to the facts.
It can be emotional for both parties so it’s important that you go into the conversation with a plan. I like to approach the conversation as if I’m blessing someone forward to do something they’re actually meant to do. It will set them free and set you free to find someone who is the right fit for the job. In the end, it always works out in a way that serves everyone for the best.
Now, I’d love to hear from you. Have you ever had to fire someone or let someone in your life go? Were you relieved? How did it feel?
Please leave a comment below. Your insights and experience could help set someone else free too!
Until next time, keep it honest and do what’s right for you, your life and your company.
